Gordon has some unfinished business at the Luther North basketball tournament. The Rams are hoping to win the title this season after losing in the finals to Taft last year.

Gordon (8-5) advanced to the championship game at Luther North with a 73-28 win over Chicago Academy (0-9) on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams will face Jones (9-6) in the title game tonight at 7:30 pm. Jones beat Luther North 35-28 on the last day of pool play.

Gordon won the Blue pool while Jones captured the Gold pool with wins over Luther North, Mather, and Guerin.

“They are hungry (to win),” Gordon head coach Tom Kleinschmidt said after beating Chicago Academy. “I think they got refocused after losing to Bishop McNamara, which is a game we should have won. I think they are focused on trying to win a championship (at Luther North). We are ready. It’s special to win a (tournament) championship.”

“We are focused,” senior Jerry Davis admitted. “We had a good game last night against Taft. We had to come out with intensity. We didn’t want to take Chicago Academy lightly.

The Rams jumped out to a 17-4 lead against Chicago Academy less than 24 hours after beating Taft 63-34.
Devanchey Bell came off the bench to lead Gordon with 15 points while sophomore Raequan Williams added 12 points.

Gordon made 30-of-62 shots while the Cougars were only 11-of-35.

The Rams began the Luther North tournament with a 42-27 win over Maine East.

Gordon would best Taft in a rematch of last year’s finale at Luther North by playing solid defense. The Rams limited Taft’s John Joyce to 10 points.

“We probably had our best game,” Kleinschmidt admitted.

Kleinschmidt is looking for the same effort against Jones.
